My name is Gaz, I am 33 years old and on a mission to experience everything and anything I haven’t experienced before.
Life is short and the world is big. There are exciting things to do and amazing places to visit everywhere. If I had unlimited funds and time to burn I would like to visit every city, town, mountain, lake, river, architectural masterpiece, art gallery and wonder in the world. Similarly I would try every activity I possibly could, from exciting thrill seeking adrenaline pumping bungee jumps, skydives, and flying a helicopter, to more conventional activities like running a marathon, doing tough obstacle races, zip wires and zorbing. I would face my fears, live life to the fullest and find daredevil adventures everywhere. But I would also experience some of the more tame, beautiful and artistic things the world has to offer, from hot air balloons, safaris and dog sledding to theatre, musicals, museums and art galleries.
Unfortunately I don’t have unlimited funds and my time is restricted by the need to work to fund my experiences!
So, in January 2015 I decided that I’m not going to sulk about the fact that I don’t have the time or funds experience everything the world has to offer. Instead from that point forward I made a steadfast commitment to experience at least one new thing every month. Crucially I made the commitment realistic and achievable. My new experiences could be anything or anywhere, from visiting a new city, town or place I haven’t been before, abroad or in the UK, to climbing a mountain, challenging myself at obstacle races and mud runs, shooting a machine gun, jumping off one of the tallest buildings in the world or even jumping out of a plane. Big or small, exciting or tame. As long as it is a new experience it counts!
To date the commitment has been a resounding success. I have drunk 100 different beers in Belgium, enjoyed a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, jumped off the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States (the 1,149 foot Stratosphere Tower), felt the power of shooting an M249 SAW, M4 machine gun and shot gun, gambled in Las Vegas and even became a Total Warrior in the Lake District.
I originally made the commitment for 12 months, but now I have started I’ve realised it is easier to experience new things and places than expected and I don’t intend on stopping! And therein lies the birth of GoGoGaz. I will use this blog to document and diarise my experiences and share them with the world. Hopefully it will inspire a few people to get up off the couch, stop watching the world through the lens of other people and start experiencing its wonders first hand.
